How to mix and match wood furniture in your bedroom

With more eclectic pairings in style becoming popular in interior design, we are becoming less formulaic about everything matching too closely in a room. A collected, layered look is a wonderful way to give your bedroom a touch of timeless appeal but mixing different styles and tones of wood can feel daunting if you're unsure what kinds of wood finishes and styles blend seamlessly together.

It is possible to create a cohesive bedroom even when mixing and matching different wood tones and our top tips will help you navigate the best way to ensure your pieces of furniture create a beautiful seamless look.

Choose a dominant wood finish

White painted floorboards and shutters set the tone for the rest of the space and become the dominate wood finish in this bedroom. With beautiful exposed beams creating sophisticated charm, a similar natural wood finish has been chosen for the bed and a pale grey wood chest of drawers with a natural wood top adds contrast.

If your room already has wood floors or exposed beams, then this will likely be your dominate finish. If not, then look to see what your largest piece is and what makes the greatest statement – perhaps, your headboard or wardrobe. Pick up on the same tones elsewhere in smaller doses and accent with another 1 or 2 finishes for a cohesive but inspiring look.

Pay attention to undertones

While you certainly don't have to match your wood finishes throughout your bedroom, they should complement each other. If the colour bias of your dominate furniture is mainly cool or warm, then the undertones of your other pieces should match, regardless of the finish.

Embrace contrasts in colour

For a more eclectic look, don't be afraid to mix tones within the same space. Choosing finishes that are completely different from one another will make the finished result look more purposeful and read more confidently than if you try to match everything too closely. These deep contrasts can be balanced out by choosing at least one mid-tone finish to make that transition a bit easier on the eye.

Look at grain patterns

When the natural grain of your chosen wood finishes comes through, you'll want to ensure that the grain patterns when mixing are similar in terms of size. A large grain pattern will generally give a room a more relaxed feel where tighter grains and less pattern will give it a more formal finish.

In our example above, the desk sets the tone with a more rustic, open grain.

Limit the number of finishes

Finally, don't go too crazy with multiple finishes within your bedroom. For the most cohesive look, choose 2-3 different finishes that repeat in the space. In our example above, the white painted floorboards are the dominate wood finish and then this is contrasted with two others: the mid-tone stronger grain pattern of the wardrobe and bedside table and the grey painted finish of the bed.

When you limit the number of different tones of wood within the space and repeat them in smaller doses, your final look will be warm, easy on the eye and completely complimentary.
